A labor data company has counted the fastest growing engineering title in the United States, and the growth is not the interesting part.
Lightcast, which sells labor market data, published its count on September 15, 2026: US postings with the title forward deployed engineer went from about 200 in 2024 to about 1,200 in 2025, and more than 5,200 appeared in the first seven months of 2026, four times the whole of 2025. Lightcast also says demand remains small next to established technology occupations. The skills asked for fall into three groups: AI and software, delivery (workflow management, scalability) and human skills (communication, problem solving, leadership). Compared with software engineer postings, three of the five most requested skills are different: AI and workflow management are absent from the software engineer top 20, while agile methodology and software development are absent from the forward deployed engineer top 20.
Bessemer Venture Partners, venture capital firm, on X: hiring engineering leaders now means redesigning the org structure to move at AI speed, not scaling a hierarchy of functional experts.
In the SaaS and IT teams we work with, the people who match that list were the seniors who already sat with the customer.
The postings describe a job that existed without a name. The name is what grew twenty-six times, our arithmetic from 200 to 5,200, not a figure Lightcast publishes.
