The forward deployed engineer job is customer discovery with the right to ship code. The first survey of the role says so with numbers.
Perspective AI, which sells a customer research tool and promotes it in the report, surveyed 1,500 forward deployed engineers and equivalent titles at 154 companies between February and April 2026 and published the results on May 18, 2026; the figures describe its sample. The median engineer reports spending 47% of the week facing the customer, 31% writing or reviewing code and 22% on internal coordination. 71% say they travel at least monthly. Only 6% say they mostly build new product; 64% deploy an existing product into a new customer environment with heavy customization. Hiring managers ranked "can run a discovery interview without a sales script" as their second signal, behind "ships production code".
McKinsey, the global management consultancy, on X: the companies making the most of AI are rethinking workflows, decisions and roles end to end, not adding AI to the way work already gets done.
Inside the SaaS teams we work with, the engineer who expects to code all week is the one who leaves in the first month. The one who stays treats the customer's Tuesday meeting as the spec.
The 47% is the job. The 31% is what it produces.
